Mary Paige Alford

NORFOLK — Mary Paige Alford, 89, of Laurel Way in Norfolk,  died March 16, 2010, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital with her family by her side.

She was born Nov. 22, 1922, to Dorothea Post (Clapp) and Van Henry Cartmell of New York City. She grew up in and around the city and in Norfolk. She attended Chatham Hall and Vassar College.

In 1942, she married Robertson Frye Alford, then a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.

After raising her family in Saddle River, N.J., and Locust Valley, N.Y., she and her husband lived for several years in Tokyo, Japan. They also lived in Italy between 1974 and 1993.

She had a lifelong love of the theater, directing and acting in productions with her husband and her father at the Amateur Comedy Club in New York and the Village Players in Locust Valley. She was also deeply commited to her churches and altar guilds and the Norfolk library.

She is survived by her sons, Michael R. Alford of Washington, D.C., Van C. Austin of Frankton, Colo., and Edward L. Alford of South Hadley, Mass.; her daughter, Dorothea B. Alford of Cambridge, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

Services will be held at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Lime Rock on Saturday, May 8, at 11 a.m., the Rev. Heidi Truax officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Norfolk Lions Ambulance, PO Box 399, Norfolk, CT 06058.

The Kenny Funeral Home in Norfolk has charge of the arrangements.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”

A five-time Grammy winner, Cray has been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and earned The Americana Music Awards Lifetime Achievement for Performance. He has played with blues and rock icons including Albert Collins, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton and many more.
