Gun safety, ethics taught in class

MILLBROOK — The Millbrook Rod and Gun Club held a hunter safety course on April 17-18 for novices from age 11 to  their late 20s.

The 12-hour course covered what constitutes a firearm, the different types of firearms, how to handle one in any situation and most importantly to always treat any gun as if it were loaded.

Students were asked to exhibit what they learned after the written test by shooting targets in the range behind the club. If they passed the written exam but performed unsafe procedures on the range they failed instantly.

Instructors emphasized that anyone with a gun should follow safety precautions at all times, and have respect for the animals being hunted. It’s essential to make ethical decisions about when and how to shoot, in order to make an effective quick kill.

The instructors also stressed that it’s important to teach ethical hunting practices and uphold the sport of hunting as a respectable activity, not a danger to society.

By exhibiting proper hunting techniques and respecting guns and game, hunters demonstrate  responsible hunting practices.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
