Records (but no egg shells) broken at egg hunt

NORTH CANAAN — Blue skies, a 60-degree breeze and more than 100 smiling children were found at the fifth annual Easter egg hunt at Sam Eddy field Saturday, April 3.

This year’s hunt was a record-breaker, with 107 children aged 4 to 10 attending. The hunting ground was divided into three sections, separating children 4 and under from ages 5 through 7 and the 8- to 10-year-olds, giving everyone an equal opportunity.

Whether the children found five eggs or none at all, each received a goodie bag for their efforts in the hunt, said Tammy MacDonald, member of the North Canaan Recreation Commission, as she handed out bags of candy.

The Easter Bunny visited and children posed with him after the hunt, which lasted 15 minutes, as they lined up to exchange plastic eggs for candy.

The North Canaan Recreation Committee sponsored the hunt and every board member was in attendance, including Earl Dakers, who spoke about the success of the event.

“It’s a beautiful day with a good turnout, he said. “It was great for the kids and that’s what it’s all about.

For each age group there was a golden and silver egg to be found. Noah Shippa of the 4-and-under age group won a tricycle, and Wyatt Wiley of the 8- to 10-year-olds won a portable CD player for finding the two golden eggs.

The other children who found gold or silver eggs received a large Easter basket full of treats. Several baskets were donated by Portfolio Properties and the rest were sponsored by the recreation commission.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
