Sexual assault added to murder charge of infant daughter

AMENIA — Last Thursday, March 30, William Tate Jr., 29, of Wassaic was arraigned on charges that he sexually assaulted and killed his 3-month-old daughter, Reese, on or around Feb. 3 in their home.

The felony complaint  reported the baby’s injuries as including a broken rib, swelling of the brain, multiple contusions and internal injuries including the tearing of the bowel from her stomach.

The infant was brought to Sharon Hospital by Tate’s wife, Robin, the night of Feb. 3. Tate was arrested the following morning.

Tate was originally charged with one count of murder in the second degree under the depraved indifference section. His arraignment revealed seven additional charges including several involving sexual assault.

Tate was arraigned before Judge Thomas Dolan, pleading not guilty to all eight counts of the indictment.

Tate has been charged with four counts of second-degree murder, two counts of predatory sexual assault against a child and one count of aggravated sexual abuse, all felonies, as well as one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

Dolan sent Tate back to jail without bail. His next court appearance will be April 13.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
