Organizations often work together

The Millerton Lions gathered at American Legion Post l78 in Millerton on Wednesday, March 24, and enjoyed dinner prepared and served by the Ladies Auxiliary. Two local organizations lending a hand to each other — a good idea and a win/win combo if you ask me. Thank you, kind ladies.

We were joined for the evening by Katie Aloan, Amber Jordan and DeLora Brooks Jr. Here’s hoping we see all three again on Wednesday, April 28. Same time, same place — for a repeat engagement. New members are always welcome, too.

Speaking of new members, Ann Deneen has stepped down after three years as membership chairperson and Sarah Hermans has stepped up to take on the position. Thanks, Ann, for a job well done, and welcome, Sarah.

On the agenda was wishing member Dick Deneen a speedy recovery from hip replacement surgery, as everyone present signed a get well card to let him know we were thinking of him. A thank you note was then circulated for Marie Tighe, who has generously donated a handmade quilt to be raffled off in June. Watch here for announcements of when and where the tickets will be available for purchase.

Speaking of tickets, we are almost there. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that by April’s meeting we will be starting our 11-month raffle drawings. There are only a handful of tickets out there and Stacey Moore is determined to reel them in. Good luck everyone.

Tail-twister sister Glynda couldn’t make the meeting so nobody had to pay up, but watch out next time. The money goes into our slush fund for incidentals, and it’s all in fun. Hopefully, she will be with us next month along with snowbirds Bob and Mary Cooper, among others.

Our board of directors has been very productive these past few months making plans for 20l0. These include (but aren’t limited to) raffles, our second silent auction, dancing to Motown and even a carnival in June. Hooray. I will keep you posted on exact dates.

Congrats go out to Lana Morrison and Stacey Moore as Lana was officially inducted into our club by president Todd Clinton and Stacey was presented a key pin in recognition of sponsoring two or more new members. Lana was pinned by sponsor Stacey and both repeated words of promise to the Lion’s organization. You go girls.

Save the date and time: Saturday, April 17, at 8 a.m., volunteers will be gathering at the old Millerton Grange for an opportunity to clean up the community. Everyone should wear sensible clothing and shoes and bring gloves. The Lions will supply the trash bags and point you in the right direction. You know what they say: “Many hands make light work. Characters welcome.

Until next time.

Melanee Mayville has been a member of the Lions Club since 2008. She lives in Millerton with her husband, Dave, and their hand-me-down cat, Theory.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
