Raffle 'meats' and exceeds expectations

HARLEM VALLEY — A meat raffle benefiting the Sunday in the Country Food Drive was a surprise hit in the last two months, as ticket sales exceeded $10,000.

The raffle drawing was held last Sunday, March 28, at The Big Grill in Millerton, where a crowd of approximately 50 supporters gathered to see if their ticket was a winning one.

The four prizes were definitely worth salivating over. Jack Mortagh of Sharon, Tom Gomez of North Canaan, Dora Delello of Dover Plains and Kyle Burdick of Elizaville all walked away with enough meat to last a lifetime, with the prizes including a half-side of beef, a full pig with smoked hams and bacon, a lamb and 30 pounds of hamburger meat with 20 pounds of breakfast sausage. The meat was provided at a reduced cost from Josef Meiller Slaughter House in Pine Plains and butcher Tom Lescynski of Sherman, Conn. The event was concocted by John Bonhotel, one of the newer members of the Sunday in the Country family.

When the cost of meat and the raffle drawing is added up, food drive founder Dave MacMillan estimated that the fundraiser will have tallied between $6,000 and $7,000, a huge number for a first-time fundraiser.

“It was a success all the way around, and the party at The Big Grill was spectacular, MacMillan reported earlier this week.

The Sunday in the Country Food Drive provided well over 1,000 Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners last year to area families in need. The fundraiser supports 17 food pantries in the Tri-state area, and MacMillan said every pantry pitched in to sell tickets.

Nearly $50,000 was raised last year by the various Sunday in the Country fundraisers, with events usually starting in August. Having such a head start going into the full-blown fundraising season is a big plus, MacMillan said, thanking the Salisbury Winter Sports Association for letting the group sell tickets at this year’s ski jumps, as well as in front of the Amenia Tractor Supply Company and at Flood’s annual farmers’ machinery auction in Amenia, held last weekend.

The next event for the food drive will be a soapbox derby on July 24, held in conjunction with the Sharon Fire Department. Following will be the string of regular Sunday in the Country events, starting with the David Waldron Memorial Poker Run at the beginning of August.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
