Pine Plains girls basketball swishes to second place

PINE PLAINS — The Pine Plains Girls Fifth and Sixth-Grade Basketball Team took second place at the Taconic Hills 12th annual Raise The Roof Basketball Tournament, held March 6 and 7.

During the two -day tournament the girls were matched against three very competitive teams. The first game on Saturday was played against Chatham.

Pine Plains came out strong and played a solid defensive game.  The offensive skills and team passing by Riley Croghan and Ciera Lamont helped put Pine Plains in a position to score and at the end of the first quarter Pine Plains had the lead 8-0.

In the second quarter Chatham came back and started to score. But Pine Plains put another eight points on the board with baskets from Alyssa Boyles, Ciera Lamont, Haleigh Funk and Ashley Starzyk. At the end of the first half, Pine Plains had the lead, 16-4.  

During the second half the passing and defensive skills of Ashley Nicolich, Nicole Lindquist and Michealla Lamont helped Pine Plains maintain control of the ball as their team began landing baskets. Anna Lonczak scored eight points, Ashley Starzyk had seven and Alyssa Boyles netted two. The final score was Pine Plains 33, Chatham 13.

   The next match up was against St. Johns CYO of Kinderhook. Both teams came out strong. With just seconds to go in the first half Anna Lonczak landed a three-pointer to close the gap and make it into a 1 point game. At the end of the first half the score was Pine Plains 9, St. John’s 10.

During the second half both teams played a strong defensive game, but Pine Plains was able to penetrate and move the ball. Ashley Starzyk led second half scoring with 10. The final score was Pine Plains 25, St. John’s CYO 22.

 Pine Plains needed to sweep all three games in their bracket to secure a place in the finals on Sunday afternoon. The third game was against Mt. Everett of Sheffield, Mass. Mt. Everett came out strong and both teams  played an excellent defensive game. At the end of the first half Pine Plains held a 3-2 lead.

In the second half Pine Plains shifted their strategy and was able to penetrate the solid defense of Mt. Everett. Pine Plains was able to pass the ball to the low post and to the inside as well as to become more aggressive with rebounding.

The final score was Pine Plains 21, Mt. Everett 13, securing their place in the championship game.

Pine Plains faced Lennox in the championship game. Lennox came out strong and landed 15 points in the first half to Pine Plains’ four.

In the second half Pine Plains tightened up their defense and become more aggressive offensively, adding 11 points from Ciera Lamont, Anna Lonczak, Ashley Nicolich, Haleigh Funk and Ashley Starzyk. However Lennox responded with 10 points and the final score was Lennox 25, Pine Plains 15.

“This tournament is the highlight of our season. We look forward to coming here each year. We knew we would be facing some tough competition and I am really pleased with the performance of the girls. They are a talented group and they showed tremendous heart and played their best. The season record is nine wins and four losses: that’s something to be very proud of,� said coach Brian Croghan.

 â€œI am so very pleased with these girls they worked extremely hard this year,â€� added assistant coach Kaitlin Croghan. “I knew we would be facing some tough teams but I knew the girls had it in them to win. To win all three games in our bracket and go to the championship game is a huge accomplishment. I am very proud of these young ladies.â€�

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
