Kent girl shows her smarts in Pony Club Quiz competition

KENT — Trisha Worthington, 11, of Kent is trying to follow in her older sister’s footsteps by competing in horse knowledge competitions. For the past two weekends Trisha has competed in Quiz, which is the competition offered by the United States Pony Club that allows members to display their equine knowledge.

On Saturday, March 13, the competition was hosted by her club, Running Fox Pony Club, at the South Kent School. Nine clubs from New York and Connecticut participated. The week before, on March 6, Trisha traveled to Ledyard, to compete in the Mystic Pony Club Quiz, where her team took third place. Next month she’ll travel to Kingston, N.Y., to compete in the regional competition. Trisha’s sister, Cassy, 15, has competed in the USPC national competition twice.

Quiz is a team competition that awards points for correctly answering a variety of questions in four different phases — a written test, oral questions in classroom, team questions in stations and identification questions in Mega-Room.

Running Fox Pony Club has members from Dutchess County, N.Y., and Connecticut. Grace Whitelock of West Redding, Conn., was one of the adult organizers of the Quiz. She is a Pony Club graduate. Both of her daughters have competed in the USPC national Quiz competition.

“Quiz teaches Pony Clubbers to recognize and appreciate how much knowledge they have,â€ explained Whitelock.  “They realize they do know quite a bit, and it teaches them more things that they might not have studied.â€

The top winners of the competition were from Shetucket Valley Pony Club, who took first place in the Junior D-rated category for those age 12 and under. The team of Mystic Pony Club and Running Fox Pony Club took first in the Senior D-rated category for those age 13 and over. Trisha’s team took seventh place.

The remaining winners were:

Junior D: second place, Northern Dutchess-A; third place, Northern Dutchess-B; fourth place, Ridge Riders/Mad River; fifth place, Running Fox-A/Mad River; sixth place, Mystic; seventh place, Running Fox, Old Chatham; eighth place, Country/Old Chatham

Senior D: second place, Mad River/Garrison; third place, Old Chatham

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
