David Robert Klemm

WASHINGTON DEPOT, CONN. — David Robert Klemm, 72, president of Klemm Real Estate in Washington Depot, passed away peacefully March 20, 2010, in Palm Beach, Fla., after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Jan. 12, 1938, in South Bend, Ind.  He attended the University of Notre Dame, and graduated from Indiana University, where he was president of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

After retiring from an illustrious career in radio broadcasting, David moved to Washington, Conn., in 1977. He and his wife, Carolyn, opened Klemm Real Estate, which became Litchfield County’s premier luxury real estate firm. David served as president and director of marketing for the firm’s five offices and 40 agents until recently, when he handed stewardship over to his two sons.

David is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn (Viccari) Klemm; his son, Peter R. Klemm and daughter-in-law, Christina Klemm; his son, Graham T. Klemm and his partner, Matthew Lynn; and his adored granddaughter, Natalie Klemm.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was intelligent, honest, articulate, good humored and a great communicator. Although a private man, he had countless friends and colleagues who admired his great dignity and the integrity of his life. There will be a private family graveside service.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
