Main Street eatery closes

NORTH CANAAN — What’s Cooking, a Main Street restaurant in the center of town, has closed, as did the previous restaurants in that space.

The highly visible location in a Canfield Building storefront does not appear to be the issue. In the last 15 years or so, the establishments there have closed due to decisions by owners to move or get out of the business altogether — or because of apparent acts of fate.

It was first renovated into an eatery when the Whistle Stop Ice Cream Shop moved there from the other end of the block. It has also been Two Sisters Café and Phoenix Café, the latter closing several months after the owner was badly injured on the premises and could no longer operate the restaurant himself.

What’s Cooking was opened in October 2008 by Pat Elias. Based on feedback from local residents, it failed to establish a good following in part because of erratic hours.

The Torrington Area Health District confirmed the restaurant was recently ordered to make corrections for code infractions found during an inspection. The deadline was March 17, but an inspector came back on that date to find the restaurant had shut down on March 14.

The property management company said the space is currently being cleaned and is available for immediate lease.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
