George F. Boynton

WINSTED — George F. Boynton, 63, of Old North Road, died March 11, 2010, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Donna (deMandey) Boynton.

Born July 29, 1946, in Chicago, he was a son of Marie E. Anderson. He lived in this area for the past 31 years. Prior to his retirement as assistant vice president of Odyssey Reinsurance, he had worked in the insurance business for more than 32 years.

He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1968. He was a Vietnam era veteran, serving in Army Intelligence as an interpreter of the Japanese language.

He was a member of the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society and the Immaculate Conception Church in New Hartford. He loved the outdoors, birds, fishing and hiking and the study of the Japanese language.

In addition to his wife of 41 years and his mother of Illinois, he is survived by a son, Geoffrey Boynton and his wife, Jennifer, of Woburn, Mass.; a daughter, Jennifer Borelli and her husband, Mario, of New Hartford; a brother, John Anderson of Mt. Zion, Ill.; three brothers-in-law, David deMandey, Daniel deMandey and Hugh deMandey; three sisters-in-law, Sr. Ann deMandey, Diane Duebber and Mary deMandey; and three grandchildren, Alyssa and Alexander Borelli and Jacqueline Boynton.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 10, at 11 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church in New Hartford. Burial will be in Village Cemetery in New Hartford. Friends may call at the Maloney Funeral Home, 55 Walnut St., Winsted, on Friday, April 9, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
