Housy ice hockey, short on players, finishes tough season

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School varsity ice hockey team ended their season in late February with four wins, one tie and 15 losses.

“But the record doesn’t show what this team has accomplished, head coach Dean Diamond said. “We had a very small team of 13 players. There was no wiggle room allowed for us at all. These guys worked hard at every game and they got better. A lot of people look at the team record, but the record just doesn’t tell the story.

With such a small roster, Housy went up against bigger teams  that could substitute other players from the bench if anyone got tired or injured. Housy did not have that luxury during any of its 20 games.

“To go up against other teams with a full squad is one thing, but to go up against them with a limited amount of players, that’s another, Diamond said. “We had only three seniors on our team, and one of them got hurt during the second game. One of my top juniors broke his collar bone while he was skiing, so he was out a good number of games.

All in all, Diamond said he is proud of his team.

“What I look for in a team is for the kids to learn, to get better and to enjoy their season, Diamond said. “This team accomplished all three of those things this season. I’m proud of them.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
