Energy Task Force goes far with several microgrants

CORNWALL — The town continues to move forward with energy initiatives directed by the Cornwall Energy Task Force.

Next up is the celebration of the new solar voltaic installation at Cornwall Consolidated School. The task force will use a small portion of earned grant funds to landscape around the base of the poles that hold the solar panel arrays erected on school grounds. A ceremony is planned at the site for Tuesday, April 20, at 1 p.m. It will include a dedication to the late John Zinsser, one of the first members of the task force.

“John deeply believed in supporting clean energy,†said task force Chair Katherine Freygang. “He was my motivation and continues to inspire us as we move forward.â€

Zinsser died in May 2008.

Since meeting the 20 percent by 2010 initiative of the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund — with well over 20 percent of local customers opting to buy energy from renewable sources —  the door has been opened to several grants.

The town is preparing to install solar panels at Town Hall and the Town Offices annex.

Microgrants, administered by the task force, paid for an energy fair and will continue to fund educational programs at the school. Students were also sent to the Talcott Mountain Science Center to study environmental issues.

The Clean Energy Fund has also established a grant program to help motivated groups and individuals get things started in their towns. Community Innovation grant applications can be found at ctcleanenergy.com.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
