Pumpkin House comes to life

MILLBROOK — Tara Wing’s Pumpkin House store will be open for business at 3275 Franklin Ave. in the village of Millbrook this Saturday, March 6.  Pumpkin House and Arrowsmith are now operating under one roof. Shoppers can still find custom design and brand new housewares and gifts from Arrowsmith by walking through Pumpkin House.

“The collaboration of the businesses makes sense, as it is all fun, useful stuff for your home and yourself,†Wing said. “I kid around and say we cater to 2 months to 102 years of age, and we have everything from andirons to earrings.†

Another business, Original Cyn, occupies an exotic corner within Pumpkin House, where all the profits from the sale of vintage and new couture apparel go to funding local animal rescue efforts and shelters. There are dramatic vintage hats, dresses made from antique saris and even a Moroccan tent for sale.

Wing has big ambitions for the new store.  “My ultimate expectation is to bring back the shopping in Millbrook, so you don’t have to head to Poughkeepsie.â€

Wing’s selection and display of merchandise in the orange-and-pink Pumpkin House makes shopping a whimsical, creative experience full of surprises. The store offers an ever-changing mix of antiques, vintage finds — chairs, china and chandeliers — and original art.

The whole enterprise also supports local artists and artisans like jewelry makers Manic Trout and Maryleen Design, painters like Tara’s brother, Charles Wing, and sculptors Fletcher Coddington, Peter Wing (Tara’s father) and Scott Tumblety.

Pumpkin House also will take vintage clothing, antiques and accessories in good condition on consignment.  As Wing says, consignment is “a very green thing for today’s shopper and their wallet.â€

Pumpkin House will be open from Wednesday to Sunday. Visit thepumpkinghousemillbrook.com Web site for details on hours and consignment.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
