Laughs, spaghetti to be served at fire company fundraiser

AMENIA — It will definitely be a laughing matter at the Immaculate Conception Church this Saturday, Feb. 27. The Amenia Fire Company and Clean Slate Entertainment Comedy are holding a comedy night fundraiser dinner, following up a similar event held late last year.

“The first one went really well, explained Fire Captain Andy Murphy. “It was successful and we wanted to try it again.

A spaghetti and meatball dinner, complete with salad and bread, will be served at 6:30 p.m. The comedy event will follow with comedians Grant Gordon, Leah Bonnema and Dustin Chafin (aka “The Redneck Rock Star) starting at 8 p.m.

As with the last show, the comedy is adult-oriented and the event’s organizers recommend leaving children at home. Tickets are $30 each and cover dinner, the show and beverage of choice, including wine and beer. A 50/50 raffle will be offered as well.

All proceeds from the event are to benefit the fire company’s new building fund. As Murphy explained, the department is working toward eventually constructing a new firehouse on a piece of property near the Maplebrook School that was purchased a few years ago.

“We’re trying to get a little nest egg together and then go through with the site plan,  finding an architect and hopefully at some point in the future actually getting a plan drawn up,â€ Murphy said.

Saturday’s event is just one of the events raising money, as well as awareness, for a new firehouse. For the past several years, the company’s yearly fund drive letter has also been devoted to the new building fund. Fire department staples like the carnival or the monthly breakfasts, however, benefit the general fund to help pay for expenses like lighting, heating and materials and supplies.

If a full stomach and belly laughs are up your alley, comedy dinner tickets are available in advance by calling 845-373-8467 or 845-849-6021. Doors will open for the event at 6 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church on Route 22 just south of the main intersection in Amenia.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
