Community members Read Aloud

SHARON — Thirteen members of the community, including residents, employees from local businesses and town officials, participated in the annual Read Aloud day at Sharon Center School on Thursday, Feb. 4.

Among the participants were Sharon Fire Department Emergency Medical Technician David Cadwell, who read “My Name Is Sangoel by Karen Lynn Williams, to a fourth-grade class.

“I’m worried that reading books will become a lost art thanks to the Internet and technology, Cadwell said. “Reading to children adds to their imagination and encourages them to read.

Selectman John Mathews read “Duck and Cover, by Jackie Urbanovic, to first-graders.

“It’s good for kids to see people who are from the outside world in their schools, Mathews said. “Reading to children influences them. If you don’t read, they don’t read.

Books read during the event included “One Brown Bunny by Marion Dane Bauer, “The Terrible Plop by Ursula Dubosarsky, “Duck and Cover by Jackie Urbanovic, “The Hermit Crab by Carter Goodrich, “Stars Above Us by Geoffrey Norman, “My Name is Sangoel by Karen Lynn Williams, “Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine, and a Miracle by Brian Dennis, and “14 Cows for America by Carmen Agra Deedy.

“This is one of the best days in the Northwest Corner, school Librarian Judy Gafney said. “This is also good for our children in our schools because they get to meet people in their community, who read wonderful books.

Also reading this year were Lisa Harmon, Kristin King, Kathy Amiet, Kim Fallon, Cheryl Hunter, Devon Sheehan, Geoffrey Klish, Selectman Meg Szalewicz, Janet Manko and Stephanie Plunkett.

The annual Read Aloud day is organized by the Northwest Connecticut Chamber of Commerce. The books were donated to the school this year by the Alcoa Foundation.
