A coffee and muffin for your trip on the train

WASSAIC — No, that’s not a schoolbus dropping off students at the train station. The newest area business is far from a conventional one, said Elaine Calvert, owner of the mobile coffee and pastry shop, Early Morn Cafe, located in the parking lot of the Wassaic Metro-North train station.

Calvert has converted a short school bus into a coffee shop on wheels, servicing travellers arriving or departing at the last stop on the Harlem Valley Metro-North line.

“I’ve had the idea for a while, Calvert said, pouring coffee inside the bus. “There was nothing here and lots of people coming through. I saw there was a need and when I mentioned it to friends, they felt it was a great idea.

Early Morn Cafe services patrons utilizing the morning train Monday through Friday. That means for people boarding at 5:10, 6, 6:30, 6:50, 8:30 and 10:26 a.m., Calvert will be parked right outside the platform, ready with a pick-me-up cup of coffee or a tasty Danish.

From rolls, bagels and muffins to water, coffee and orange juice, Calvert is stocked and ready, and always looking for new suggestions on how to improve her selection. So far, so good, she reported.

“Everybody who’s come by has been very welcoming and happy we’re here, she said.

For those in a rush, advance ordering is also available by calling Early Morn Cafe at 914-474-9922. Calvert accepts only cash, no credit or debit cards.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
