New loader in the works for the town

AMENIA — The Town Board opened and accepted bids on a new wheel loader for the Highway Department at its Jan. 21 meeting.

Two bids came in, from Westchester Tractor, a New Holland franchise of Brewster, and Jesco John Deere of Fishkill.

Highway Superintendent Stan Whitehead said that the town was also going to need a backup large plow. He added it into the bid specifications sent out.

Jesco’s bid was accepted by the board at $123,200, including the plow. Whitehead said that the New Holland package didn’t meet all the requirements, and that Jesco will accept a trade-in for the old loader.

The board had not decided whether it would be leasing the vehicle or borrowing money using a bond resolution. Whitehead said the finance charge for the first three years would be 3.59 percent.

“We’ll have to review the financing, town Supervisor Wayne Euvrard said prior to the board accepting Jesco’s bid.

Town agrees motorists should slow down

near Rail Trail

Despite the slim chance that the town’s request will be approved, Amenia has submitted a resolution asking that speed limits in areas where the Harlem Valley Rail Trail crosses the road be reduced to 25 mph.

If accepted, the affected roads include Sharon Station Road, Sheffield Road, Mechanic Street, Dunn Road, Old Route 22 and Route 343.

The next Town Board meeting is scheduled for Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
