Sunday in the Country set to 'meat' area need

TRI-STATE AREA — A new fundraiser by the Sunday in the Country Food Drive group will have meat-lovers reaching for their wallets in the name of charity over the next two months, as the organization, which provides assistance to 16 food pantries in the Tri-state area, begins to spread its fundraising efforts over the entire year.

The meat raffle, to be drawn at the end of March, will benefit the food drive effort, which for over a decade has provided an increasing number of families in need with reasons to be thankful during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Last year alone $49,500 was raised, with Sunday in the Country providing 610 complete Christmas dinners to the area, the highest number yet.

Tickets for the raffle, which are $5 each, are entered into a drawing for four prizes: a half-side of beef, a full pig with smoked hams and bacon, a lamb or 30 pounds of hamburger meat accompanied by 20 pounds of breakfast sausage. The meat is being provided at a reduced cost from Josef Meiller Slaughter House in Pine Plains and butcher Tom Lescynski of Sherman, Conn.

Sitting in The Millerton News’ office, Dave MacMillan, founder of the food drive effort, explained that the group’s newest idea came from John Bonhotel and his wife, Debbie Wheeler, and Pat Dineen. Bonhotel and Wheeler are the newest additions to the Sunday in the Country committee, an informal group consisting of the people who contribute consistently to the food drive’s efforts.

“Dave does so many great things,� explained Bonhotel, who accompanied MacMillan on his visit. “We just wanted to see if we could help out. This is something I’m sure everyone in the area could sure use. It’s a win-win situation.�

Four lucky ticket-holders will get plenty of meat for their freezers, custom cut and wrapped to the winners’ pleasure.

“[They] came on board and really stepped up to the plate,� said MacMillan about the new members of the Sunday family. “We’re going to go year round now because of the need. We had a very successful year in 2009 but we really had to work to the nth degree to get to the level we needed to. It would be easier if we spread out [our efforts].�

One of the most important aspects of the group’s new approach for 2010 is that they are being extra careful not to interfere with any other nonprofit fundraising. Other than that, having a full 12 months to raise funds will give the organization more flexibility to make events as successful as possible.

They’re not wasting much time, either; along with the upcoming raffle, the Sunday in the Country gang will be heading to Salisbury for this year’s ski jumps. Situated behind the grill on Friday, Feb. 5, proceeds from sales that night will be contributed directly to the Sunday in the Country Food Drive.The group, in appreciation, will be available all weekend long to assist the Salisbury Winter Sports Association during the ski jumps.

Working together with community organizations and nonprofits is the key to the future of fundraising, MacMillan added.

“We have to help each other reach our goals,� he said. “That’s the wave of the future.�

The pantries will probably be hit harder than ever this year with need, and Sunday in the Country is determined to reach out to towns that might not know much about the food drive effort yet receive significant assistance from the group every year.

“We really thought this was a two-fold thing,� MacMillan went on, “in making each community aware of what we’re all about, and hopefully help us in the future when we really get into our bigger events like the poker run or the golf tournament or pig roast or dinner dance.�

It’s a lot to look forward to in 2010, and with new ideas like the raffle or last year’s turkey flockings (which reportedly raised as much as $3,000) coming out of a group willing to work hard and think creatively, it’s already shaping up to be another successful and fulfilling year for Sunday in the Country.

The drawing for the meat raffle will be held March 28 at 12:30 p.m. at The Big Grill Restaurant, located just north of the intersection of routes 44 and 22 in Millerton. Finger foods will be provided. Tickets will be available from any of the 16 area food pantries or from anyone on the Sunday in the Country committee. It is still too early to sow seeds outside, except for peas, both the edible and floral kind. I have transplanted a few shrubs and a dogwood tree that was root pruned in the fall. I have also moved a few hellebores that seeded in the near woods back into their garden beds near the house; they seem not to mind the few frosty mornings we have recently had. In years past I would have been cleaning up the plant beds but I now know better and will wait at least six weeks more. I have instead found the most perfect time-consuming activity for early spring: teasing out Vinca minor, also known as periwinkle and myrtle, from the ground in places it was never meant to be.

Planting the stuff in the first place is my biggest ever garden regret. It was recommended to me as a groundcover that would hold together a hillside, bare after a removal of invasive plants save for a dozen or so trees. And here we are, twelve years later; there is vinca everywhere. It blankets the hillside and has crept over the top into the woods. It has made its way left and right. I am convinced that vinca is the plastic of the plant world. The stuff won’t die. (The name Vinca comes from the Latin ‘vincire’ which means ‘to bind or fetter.’) Last year I pulled a bunch and left it strewn on the roof of the root cellar for 6 months and the leaves were still green.

WINSTED — A back-and-forth baseball game between Housatonic Valley Regional High School and Northwestern Regional High School ended 3-2 in favor of Northwestern on Tuesday, April 9.

The Highlanders played a disciplined defensive game and kept errors to a minimum. Wyatt Bayer pitched a strong six innings for HVRHS, but the Mountaineers fell behind late and were unable to come back in the seventh.
