Stroble cooks for a good cause

KENT — Patsy Stroble, who owned and managed the Stroble Baking Company for more than 25 years, is leading cooking classes at the Kent Community House for the next three Sundays.

The classes, which are designed for all cooking levels, are hands on and teach students how to cook winter dishes.

This past Sunday, Stroble and her daughter, Kari Morales, taught the class how to make bread and soup.

“Cooking has always been important to me because I care about what I eat and what my family eats,� Stroble said. “I love to eat, and I have always had great fun researching the techniques on how to cook meals. And when you cook things from scratch, the meals do not have any preservatives or additives in them. It’s all good old-fashioned homemade cooking.�

Stroble compared homemade chicken soup  to store-bought versions. Salt, for example, can be a problem with  many store brands — even those that have relatively few and relatively healthful ingredients.  With homemade soup, she noted, you can control how much salt you add.

“It’s also much less expensive to make things from scratch,� she said.

At the next class, on Sunday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m., Stroble will demonstrate how to make pizza from scratch.

On Sunday, Feb. 7, also at 2 p.m., Stroble will share recipes and techniques for making comfort foods such as chili, tamale pie, frittata with a potato crust and gourmet macaroni and cheese.

In the final class, on Sunday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m., Stroble will make simple and sweet desserts including chocolate mousse bonbons, lemon curd tarts, chocolate-dipped cheesecake balls and mountain pies.

Each class costs $65 per adult and $20 for children. All proceeds from the classes will benefit Greenwoods Counseling Referrals.

LAKEVILLE — Yale University advanced to the NCAA men’s basketball tournament after a buzzer-beater win over Brown University in the Ivy League championship game Sunday, March 17.

On Yale’s roster this year are two graduates of The Hotchkiss School: Nick Townsend, class of ‘22, and Jack Molloy, class of ‘21. Townsend wears No. 42 and Molloy wears No. 33.

KENT—There will be a joyful noise in St. Andrew’s Church Easter morning when a set of handbells donated to the church some 40 years ago are used for the first time by a choir currently rehearsing with music director Susan Guse.

Guse said that the church got the valuable three-octave set when Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center closed in the late 1980s and the bells were donated to the church. “The center used the bells for music therapy for younger patients. Our priest then was chaplain there and when the center closed, he brought the bells here,” she explained.
