Housatonic ice hockey team doing well despite handicaps

FALLS VILLAGE — All things considered, Housatonic Valley Regional High School varsity hockey coach Dean Diamond said, his team is having a very good year.

As of Friday, Jan. 15, the team has had four wins and seven losses this season.

“We’re doing pretty good, especially considering that our team has only 14 students on it, Diamond said. “Most teams in the state have 23 players, so we have an overachieving team here.

There are only three seniors on the team — and one of them has missed several games because of a torn thumb.

“We are at a major disadvantage, but we always give 100 percent effort, Diamond said. “We have a freshman on our team who sees a lot of play, and freshmen are rarely supposed to be playing varsity hockey. At the beginning of the season, I told the team not to worry about the results. If we get our butts kicked, we get our butts kicked. But the key is to keep playing harder.

And indeed, Diamond said, the team has had better results with each and every game.

“We’re holding our heads up high, he said. “When we get our butts kicked, we learn from it. And when we play a team that is evenly matched with us, we excel at beating them.

Diamond predicts that the team has an outside chance of making the state finals this year.

In the meantime, the team is celebrating its fourth straight Berkshire Cup win against Shepaug. Housy handily beat Shepaug by a score of 5 to 1 on Friday, Jan. 15.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
