Planning Board roster shuffled for 2010

PINE PLAINS — Heading into 2010, the town’s Planning Board has been rearranged a bit. Rick Butler, who had served on the Town Board for the past decade until he lost the seat during the recent November elections, was appointed at the reorganization meeting as the Planning Board chair. Sarah Jones, who for the past year and change has been actively serving as an alternate board member, becomes a full member as Jon DePreter turned in a letter of resignation. Bruce Pecorella also submitted his letter of resignation, as he will be moving to the newly formed Zoning Board of Appeals.

Butler and Jones will serve out the remainder of DePreter and Pecorella’s terms, which both end this year.

“I’ve got to engage the board and keep them informed, Butler said when asked how he would approach chairing the Planning Board. “It’s a group effort.

Butler said that as of this time, he was expecting to seek reappointment when his current term expires.

The next Planning Board meeting will be held Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
