Wolcott Tech takes Northwestern Duals

WINSTED — This time last year, Gilbert’s wrestling squad was bulldozing their way through nearly every opponent they faced, tacking on a strong victory at last season’s Northwestern Duals tournament. This year, the defending champions found themselves finishing in third place.

Not bad turnout for a team that lost seven key senior grapplers to graduation. The Jackets’ youthful squad improved noticeably from their season-opening loss to Wolcott Tech, but was unable to maintain their performance to secure another Northwestern Duals victory.

Gilbert quickly dispatched Rocky Hill with a 12-pin 72-10 triumph to open up the tournament. They then battled it out with Canton in a round that was clearly taxing for both squads.

The Wolcott Tech Wildcats defeated Stafford 48-33 to capture the Northwestern Duals victory.

Gilbert’s youth continues to improve with experience but the Jackets are nicely anchored with a handful of veteran upper classman who are building impressive individual records this season. Ross Lopardo, Xavier Dubois, Josh Hoxie and Alek Smith — who remains undefeated 19-0 at the 130-lb. level — will be expected to call on that experience and talent this Saturday, Jan. 16, when Gilbert hosts Derby, Canton and Seymour in a quad match that starts at 10 p.m.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
