Salisbury Bank & Trust will open Millerton branch on Tuesday

MILLERTON — The eighth branch of Salisbury Bank and Trust Co. is set to open its doors to the public Tuesday, Jan. 19. It will be the newest business for the village and the bank’s second New York state branch.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, an hour after the branch opens for business.

The bank purchased the property at the corner of Main Street and Maple Avenue in February 2009.

This will be the company’s first LEED-certified branch (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a green building rating system).

“We’ve taken the steps to go green in other locations, said President Rick Cantele. “But this is the first time we were able to do it right from scratch.

The building, designed to fit into the community, is a two-story, Victorian-style structure. The second floor, which is not yet complete, will be leased to a local law firm (the name of the firm has not been released) and could eventually be used for space for future bank expansion.

As at other Salisbury Bank branches, there are pod-shaped teller stations, which  give customers more privacy than a traditional teller line.

Flat-screen televisions and a fish tank are in the main room.

The bank building is sectioned in a way that the back rooms, which include a large conference room, can be sealed off and used by not-for-profit and community groups outside of bank hours. It’s another step in the direction of integrating the building into the community, Cantele said.

“We’ve always had a close relationship with the business community and consumers in Millerton, and strong support for the Millerton community, he added. “And the response [to the new building] from customers and residents has been very welcoming. The village has been great to work with.

The branch manager will be Lana Morrison, a Millerton native. There will also be an assistant manager, four tellers, a commercial loan officer “and all the resources of the Salisbury Bank and Trust Co., said Diane Farrell, the bank’s senior vice president and head of marketing.

Lobby hours at the bank will be Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Drive-through hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The ATM is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
