Delivery service owner takes a new direction

WINSTED — The end of 2009 marked the end of the road for Regner Delivery Service, a local business that has delivered newspapers in Litchfield County for the past 30 years, including The Winsted Journal.

Regner Delivery Service owner Eric Regner said he has enjoyed his time traveling to newspapers and local businesses throughout the years but that financial demands and the need for health insurance prompted him to seek full-time employment. He begins the new year as a driver for Center Subaru in Torrington.

“I was the first one to deliver the Foothills Trader 30 years ago and I’m the only guy who has ever delivered them, Regner recalled, adding that he has also been with The Winsted Journal since it opened in 1996. “I was working at a vending company in the 70s and I needed a part-time job to make some extra money. Back then, deliveries took one night. Now it takes three days.

Regner suffered a stroke in February 2007 and fully recovered, returning to his delivery business later that year. He and his wife, Ann, have teamed up in recent years to make deliveries. “She’s done part of the Foothills delivery and we also did the Bargain News. She hates the winter and it’s not fair to make her work, so she’s going to retire completely and take care of me, Regner chuckled.

Janet Manko, publisher of The Winsted Journal, said Regner will be missed. “Eric has very reliably delivered The Winsted Journal since its inception. The Lakeville Journal Company drivers are now training with Eric to run his route but I know those who have seen him on a regular basis for so many years will miss him. We will miss him as well and wish him all the best in his new venture.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
