Joseph R. Cadrain

WINSTED — Joseph Richard Cadrain, 81, died peacefully at his home Dec. 22, 2009, surrounded by family. He was the husband of Sally (Church) Cadrain for 57 years.

Mr. Cadrain was born Sept. 9, 1928, in Winsted, the son of the late Mildred (Dayton) and Joseph N. Cadrain. He attended schools in Winsted and graduated from The Gilbert School. He served his country for four years in the submarine service, aboard the USS Clamagore 343. He thoroughly enjoyed his retirement after 33 years at SNET. He served as president of the local chapter of the SNET Pioneers and the Highland Lake Watershed Association.

Mr. Cadrain was active in local politics and served on the Winchester Board of Education. Known as “Mr. Fix-It†to his family and friends, he loved gardening, solving problems and visiting Maine. Sally and his family were the center of his world before everything else.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Cadrain is survived by his son, Mark Cadrain and his wife, April, of Barkhamsted; his daughter Kim Carbone and her husband, Bob, of Wells, Maine; four grandchildren, Rob and Lori Carbone, Holly Hochman and Colleen Smith; a nephew, Bruce Church; a niece, Lynn Truby; a brother, Robert Cadrain; and a sister, Joyce Roberts. His son, Jay, predeceased him.

The family thanks hospice professionals, aides and visiting nurses for their kind and caring support.

A memorial service celebrating Mr. Cadrain’s life will be held Sunday, Dec. 27, at the Montano-Shea Funeral Home, Winsted, with calling hours from 10 to 11 a.m. and a service starting at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
