Nelson 'Bam' Whitbeck

Salisbury — Nelson “Bamâ€� Whitbeck, 81, of Weatogue Road died Dec. 19, 2009,  at Sharon Hospital. He was the husband of Audrey (Murphy) Whitbeck.  

Bam was born Sept. 10, 1928, and was a lifelong resident of the town of Salisbury. He was the son of the late Carrie (Marston) and Samuel Whitbeck.  

He graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School and the University of Connecticut’s College of Pharmacy. He was a registered pharmacist for 52 years at the Salisbury Pharmacy, his family’s business. He served on the founding board of the original Salisbury Sewer Commission and was an original member of the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Squad.  He was active in  the Salisbury Winter Sports Association for many years and was involved in the formation of the Connecticut Party in Salisbury.  

He will be remembered for his cheerful, kind presence in the drugstore.

Bam served his country as a member of the U.S. Army in  the 2nd Armored Division in Germany from 1951 to 1952.  

In addition to his wife, Bam is survived by his children, Karen and Gordon, both of Salisbury; his sister, Anna Whitbeck; his nieces, Donna Roberts, Robin Chrisman, Colleen Kleczkowski, Sherri Hancock and Lynn Russo; and his nephews, Mark Williams, Jay Murphy and Gary Murphy.  

Bam was predeceased by his brother, Walter.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance or to Noble Horizons.

A celebration of Bam’s life will be held at a later date.  

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
