Snow mobile accident claims life

ANCRAMDALE — A snowmobile accident claimed the life of a 25-year-old Ancramdale resident last Saturday, Dec. 12.

Michael Miller Jr. was pronounced dead by Columbia County Coroner Dr. George Davis, according to a press release provided by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. At 1:15 a.m. on Dec. 12, a sheriff’s patrol responded to a reported snowmobile accident on a field approximately 500 feet east of Route 82 in Ancramdale, near the intersection with Pat’s Lane.

The sheriff’s office reported that Miller was driving a 2006 Arctic Cat snowmobile when he crested a hill, landed and continued a short distance before striking a downed tree at the edge of the field. Police said the snowmobile became airborne before the front end struck the ground and flipped over, landing approximately 16 feet away from Miller.

Family members went out looking for the victim after he did not return home from snowmobiling. Miller was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, the police reported.

Members of the Copake Rescue Squad and Ancram Fire Department assisted on the scene. Miller was transported to St. Peter’s hospital in Albany, where an autopsy was scheduled for Dec. 12. The investigation is continuing, but a representative for the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office reported at press time that there have been no further updates.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
