Sharp rise in number of break-ins

SALISBURY — Resident State Trooper Mark Lauretano warned Salisbury residents of a number of recent residential burglaries in a press release Tuesday, Dec. 15.

Lauretano said the break-ins have occurred mostly during the late afternoon and early evening hours, and specified Belgo Road, Undermountain Road (Route 41) and Sharon Road (Route 41) as areas of concern. (See the Police Blotter on Page A2 for more details.)

The items stolen have been mostly electronics: flat-screen television sets, DVD players, video games, and iPods. The thieves have also taken cameras and jewelry.

Lauretano urged residents to make sure their homes, garages and vehicles are locked and, when possible, remove valuables from sight. He also warned against hiding house keys outside.

If a resident sees someone suspicious, try to note the person’s physical description and clothing, and the make or model, color, license number if possible and direction of travel when last seen of any suspicious vehicles. Report this information immediately to the resident trooper at 860-435-2938 or the state police at Troop B, at 860-824-2500.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
