A Russian Is Coming, and Offenbach, too

Hark! The holidays are here, and that means plenty of festive music. One of the most enticing events in coming weeks is a concert on Dec. 20, at 3 p.m., featuring Grammy award-winning pianist Yefim Bronfman playing the Prokofiev Concerto No. 2 in G Minor with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic led by Randall Fleischer. Some insist that Prokofiev and Shostakovich were the greatest composers of the 20th century. I’d vote for Stravinsky before Prokofiev, but reluctantly — the latter’s music has always been at the top of my playlist. This concerto is closer in style to his ballets “Romeo and Juliet†and “Cinderella†than its numerical neighbors 1 and 3, but there is also some of the fiery brilliance of the piano sonatas. Ferociously difficult to play, but easy to enjoy. Bronfman, born in 1958, is in the very highest tier of pianists in his generation. He played Tchaikovsky at Tanglewood in July; to hear him in the area again so soon is most welcome. The concert will also feature Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 in G Major and Kodaly’s Galanta Dances. Ticket holders are invited to a preconcert talk with Fleischer. Tickets range from $24 to $44. Student rush tickets will be available one hour prior to the concert for $20 at the Bardavon Box Office. 845-473-2072.

Also at the Bardavon, on Dec. 19, at 1 p.m., is the next Metropolitan Opera HD transmission, Jacques Offenbach’s “Tales of Hoffman,†with Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher directing this new production. James Levine conducts star tenor Joseph Calleja in the tour-de-force title role, with Anna Netrebko as the tragic Antonia, Kate Lindsey as the ambiguous Nicklausse, and Alan Held as the demonic four villains.

The Cappella Festiva Chamber Choir will present Jubilant Song: Celebrate and Sing! on Dec. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Millbrook and on Sun. Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. in Poughkeepsie. In this 35th anniversary year, Cappella Festiva’s holiday concert will feature the “Christmas Cantata (Sinfonia Sacra)†by Daniel Pinkham, accompanied by a brass quintet, as well as Norman Dello Joio’s  “A Jubilant Song,†adapting words by Walt Whitman. The Cappella Festiva Treble Choir will present various carols and some Hannukah songs.

The two performances will be on Saturday at Lyall Memorial Federated Church, 30 Maple Ave., Millbrook, and Sunday at the Vassar College Chapel, 124 Raymond Ave., Poughkeepsie. Call  845-454-0715,  or go to www.cappellafestiva.org

On Dec. 12 at 8 p.m., the Salisbury Association will present their annual Victorian Christmas Concert at The Academy Building, 24 Main St. in Salisbury, CT. The concert titled “ Now Winter Nights â€will feature Daniel Swenberg on lute, theorbo and guitar; Judith Dansker on oboe and recorders, and Philip Anderson, tenor, in a variety of works from the Renaissance to classical periods and some seasonal selections. The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
