New plow truck for North East

NORTH EAST — Highway Superintendent Robert Stevens presented an update to the Town Board at its workshop meeting on Thursday, Nov. 5, at Town Hall. The big news in Stevens’ report was that he has found a new truck to replace one that has been deteriorating.

The new truck is a 2001 GMC 5500. It’s got a regular cab, is a 4x4 with a 10-foot snow plow and a stainless steel combo body. The purchase is not through a state contract; the town must go out to bid.

"This vehicle is very central during snow and ice removal," Stevens told the board. "This truck will really be a tremendous help, especially when the snow is falling 1 inch an hour."

And it’s also going to be useful in the "off" seasons.

"In the summertime it will get used just about everyday," Stevens said. "The men will take it out to jobs, carry their tools in it. It’s a dump body combo — so that’s helpful."

"And this is a lot cheaper than the other one we looked at," said Councilman Dave McGhee, who helped in the search of the truck. "It was $50,000 to $60,000 cheaper. And this is the size we were looking for. And the front end is heavier duty. But it’s not a big truck, it’s going to have to be kept clean."

McGhee added that there were many extras that came with the truck as standard features, including heated mirrors, that sold him on buying the vehicle. He also liked the idea of bidding on the truck; he said that perhaps that way the town could get a better price.

With that the discussion came to a close, and approval was given so that Stevens could go out to bid for the truck.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
