Berkshire Bowl steeped in history

FALLS VILLAGE — In a Thanksgiving Day tradition, the Housatonic Valley Regional High School football team will head to Winsted today (Thursday, Nov. 26) to play in the 25th annual Berkshire Bowl at The Gilbert School.

Housy head coach Deron Bayer said both teams are going into the annual tradition tied, with Housy winning 12 of the past events and Gilbert winning the other 12.

“The Berkshire Bowl started when the athletic directors from both schools came together and decided to have a Thanksgiving game with a bowl-like atmosphere, Bayer said. “Since Housy and Gilbert were the only two varsity football teams in the Berkshire League at the time, they decided to call it the Berkshire Bowl.

Housy went into the Berkshire Bowl with eight losses and only one win, while Gilbert, as of last Friday, is going into the game with six wins and two losses.

“Gilbert is one of the top tournament teams, Bayer said. “This is the only time in the season we play them. This year we’re going to have kids playing in the bowl for the first time. There is nothing like it.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
