Getting to the root of the problem

AMENIA — The locust trees planted around Fountain Square have “grown too well, according to Herb Eschbach, who at last Thursday’s Town Board meeting requested something be done to curb their overgrowth. Eschbach tends to the grounds at Fountain Square.

The trees are obstructing road signs and could be a problem for the utility companies. If the town doesn’t act soon the utility companies could address the problem themselves and “ruin the trees, Eschbach warned.

In the short term, Eschbach and board members agreed that the trees should be trimmed and pruned. The longer into the cold season the town waits, the harder it will be to trim.

Town Supervisor Wayne Euvrard said the trees have gotten to the point where it would be in the town’s best interest to hire a professional landscaper. Eschbach and Councilwomen Vicki Doyle and Victoria Perotti said they would look into cost estimates in time for action at tonight’s board meeting.

Vacancies to consider

Several committees and boards will need new members come 2010.

Herb Schwager’s term on the Board of Assessment Review is expiring, and the board voted to approve him for another term. Doyle dissented, saying the position should be advertised and other residents given a fair chance to apply. Euvrard rebutted that Schwager’s experience on the board is invaluable and the amount of training and knowledge required for the position qualified him.

Councilwoman-Elect Darlene Riemer will have to relinquish her position as chairman of the Wastewater Committee. The board accepted her immediate resignation. Riemer recommended current committee secretary Janet Reagon for the position; the board did not take action.

Tony Robustelli’s seven-year term on the Planning Board will expire at the end of the year.Euvrard said Robustelli, who has 17 years of experience on the board, is interested in serving another term.

Finally, Rudy Eschbach is stepping down from his position as Zoning Board of Appeals chairman.

The seats on the Wastewater Committee, Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals will all be advertised for, the board agreed. Each of the residents was thanked for their hard work for the town. Anyone interested in applying for any of the seats can call Town Hall at 845-373-8860.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
