State Police seek tips after bank robbery

NEW HARTFORD — State police are asking area residents to pass along any information they might have that could help in the criminal investigation of the robbery of a local bank in New Hartford last weekend.

The Northwest Community Bank in the Foothills Plaza along Route 44 in New Hartford was robbed Saturday, Oct. 10, around 10:40 a.m.

The suspect, as seen on video surveillance tape, is described as a white male, approximately 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-9 in height, heavyset and of an unknown age.

According to Lt. Paul Vance of state police, preliminary reports indicate that the suspect entered the bank, handed the teller a note implying that he had a gun and demanded cash.

The suspect then exited through the rear of the bank and got into a light color four-door sedan, possibly a Honda. The man left the bank and headed east on Route 44.

At no time was a gun displayed, and the suspect left with an undetermined amount of cash, Vance said. No one was injured.

State Trooper Roy Dungan told The Journal Monday that the Connecticut State Police Major Crime Squad detectives are heading the ongoing investigation of the robbery.

State police are asking anyone in the vicinity of the New Hartford Northwest Community Bank just before or at the time of the robbery who may have seen anything to contact State Police Troop B in North Canaan at 800-497-0403.

Residents can also anonymously text a crime tip to the state police via their cell phone or other mobile device. To pass along information, text “TIP711 plus your message to CRIMES (274637).

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
