Sprucing-up work continues at Town Hall

CORNWALL — Work continues this month on refurbishing Town Hall, following exterior painting.

The Board of Selectmen agreed to continue to tap into a capital fund specifically for Town Hall.

A $3,000 bid was accepted from Decker & Beebe for the installation of two 275-gallon heating oil tanks. The tanks will replace two old tanks in the basement, which will go to the town garage to store waste oil used for heating there.

The town will save money by taking on the job of moving the tanks.

A more visible improvement will be the refinishing of the hardwood floors. A bid of $2,970 was accepted from James Prentice. Work is expected to be done over this weekend. Prentice offered to redo the stage floor for an extra $275, but the board said no.

There was discussion of the history of the narrow-board floors. They are believed to be ash and they are also thought to be the original floors, making them a century old. It was agreed they should be restained the same light color they are now.

It was also noted the balcony staircase in the lobby was once painted. Some years ago, the old chestnut was refinished to reveal its natural beauty.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
