Housy football home opener: 'More wrong than right'

FALLS VILLAGE — While a crowd of more than 50 fans cheered their team on, despite the rainy weather, the Housatonic Valley Regional High School varsity football team started its home season on Saturday, Oct. 3, with a loss against Windsor Locks.

Tanner Brissett threw two touchdowns and Donyell Williams had two interceptions during the game.

But that wasn’t enough for the Mountaineers, who lost 29-12.

After the game, head coach Deron Bayer said that “more wrong than right happened for the team that afternoon.

“As a team, we have three goals, Bayer said. “Our goals are to outrush our opponent, to win the turnover battle and to win the penalty battle. Usually when we achieve all three of those goals we have a good shot at winning. However, we lost in all three of those categories.

Bayer said that Windsor Locks’ running back outrushed the entire Mountaineers team several times during the game.

“You just can’t win the game when that happens, Bayer said. “We were prepared to stop their option and we did shut down their option. Unfortunately, they were able to go to their power game, gashing us on runs up the middle. We did switch over to a five-man front and slow the game down, but they still were able to beat us with their power football.

Bayer said he was happy with the turnout of the fans, who braved the rain.

“We have a small school, but a big region, he said. “People come from a long way to see us play and we are very grateful for them. We will continue to improve in passing and hopefully will improve each game we play.

The next home game will be  Saturday, Oct. 10, against Haddam/Killingworth at 3 p.m.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
