Gertrude E. 'Trudi' Fox

NORTH CANAAN—Gertrude E. “Trudi� Fox, 88, died on Sept. 29, 2009, at Geer.

Trudi was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.,  on April 5, 1921, the daughter of  Gertrude  and Dr. Charles Lubrecht. She was a resident of Lakeville for more than 40 years.

The family moved to Westport, Conn., where Trudi attended Staples High School. She went on to graduate from the Juilliard  School of Music and Skidmore College.

She married William L. Fox Jr. in 1942. He resides at Geer Village. During World War II, while her husband was overseas, she worked at Manning, Maxwell and Moore, a Bridgeport factory that manufactured gun sights.

They moved to the Cornwall area in 1948, where they lived for 13 years before making their home in Lakeville. The mother of four children, she was a devoted flower gardener and an enthusiastic tennis player for many years.

Trudi also found time to volunteer for the Red Cross, Sharon Hospital, Meals on Wheels and SERRV International. She worked for several years for Fitch-Kain Associates as well as The Lakeville Journal. She was a member of the Salisbury Congregational Church and  sang in the choir.

Although she had many interests, her most cherished moments were those spent with her family.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Bill Fox III and his wife, Lynne, of Panama, Betsy Reinholt and her husband, George, of North Canaan, Jeffrey Fox and his wife, Marianne, of West Cornwall and Jennifer Harnett and her husband, Andrew, of Piermont, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Christopher Reinholt and his wife, Abby,  and Timothy Reinholt and his wife, Monika, all of Longmont, Colo., Laura, Charles and Oliver Fox of West Cornwall and Lindsay and Chase Harnett of Piermont; and a great-grandchild, Cora Reinholt of Longmont, the daughter of Timothy and Monika.

She was predeceased by her younger brother, Charles.

There will be a memorial service at Salisbury Congregational Church on Monday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m.  A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Little Guild of St. Francis and Meals on Wheels.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
