Big game for seniors in Webutuck boys soccer win

WEBUTUCK — All three seniors on the Webutuck boys varsity soccer team scored last Friday, Oct. 2, during their Senior Day match, lifting the Warriors to a 4-0 win over Coleman.

Richard Peck, Patrick McCaffery and Justin Lind each kicked their way to the back of the net for the Warriors, with junior Eric Betschart adding the final goal for the varsity team.

Head coach Henry Pollinger explained that last year his team lost a lot of seniors. The early part of the year was focused on rebuilding. He said his team has been picking it up recently, however, winning two of its last three games last week.

“We’re starting to work better as a team, he said. With the win over Coleman, Webutuck has qualified for sectionals, ensuring post-season play.

Of other note during Friday’s game was sophomore Matt Matteo, who has stepped in as goalkeeper for the Warriors after the team’s starter was injured. In the last two games Matteo has made 14 saves, including the shutout against Coleman.

“Overall it was a pretty good game and everyone played well, the coach said.

The win lifts Webutuck to 3-5-1 for the season.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
