McMahon visits

WINSTED — In one of the first official stops of her campaign, newly announced U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon visited with members of the Winsted Republican Town Committee Friday, Sept. 25, during a local GOP fundraiser at a private residence along Highland Lake.

McMahon is seeking the Republican Party nomination to run against incumbent Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd in the 2010 election.

The Greenwich resident stepped down as the chief executive officer of the Stamford-based World Wrestling Entertainment on Sept. 16 to run for the Senate nomination.

McMahon briefly addressed those who attended last Friday night’s fundraiser, saying that Dodd had “lost touch with the people of Connecticut and that there had to be a more “common sense approach to government in Washington, D.C.

“I want to get right into Washington and roll up my sleeves and get to work, she said.

McMahon also said her campaign would not be accepting any private political action committee (PAC) or special interest money, while also limiting individual contributions to $100.

Instead, McMahon said she intends to self-finance most of her run for the Republican nomination.

“It’s about people, she said of her campaign.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
