Sharon bridge scores September 3

LAKEVILLE —There were nine and a half  tables for duplicate bridge at the Interlaken Inn on Aug. 26. The game followed a delightful buffet at that very comfortable and highly recommended establishment. We played two boards a round, with a BYE table. North South pairs played 20 boards and had an average score of 80. East West pairs played 18 boards, and the computer adjusted the scores to make believe that they also had an average score of 80.

I found the North South cards unusual, challenging and not much fun.  Everyone said they very much enjoyed the afternoon.  Next week we will be back home at Good Neighbors in Sharon at 1 Low Road.

The winners : For North South pairs, in first with 94.5 points (59.06 percent) were Catherine Brazelton and Reiner Kopp; in second with 92.5 points (57.81 percent) were Cindy Rubicam and Dick Collins, and in third with 85.5 points (53.44 percent) were Katherine Beatty and Ann Patton.

For East West pairs, in first with 105.56 points (65.98 percent) were Doris Reeves and Joan Turnure; in second with 92.78 points (57.99 percent) were Lilly Beck and Ryan Hart, and in third with 86.67 points (54.17percent) were Barbara Griggs and Trish Stimpson.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
