Brass City Brew takes lead in Tri-State Championships

TORRINGTON — After a resounding 12-3 victory over last year’s Tri-State Champion Winsted Whalers, the first-place Brass City Brew of Waterbury claimed a 3-1 victory over the second-place Bethlehem Plowboys Sunday, Aug. 16, at Fuessenich Park in game one of the Tri-State Championships.

Despite battling through unforgiving heat and humidity, both the Brew and the Plowboys turned in solid performances. The score remained dangerously tight, forcing the Brew to put in a full-game effort to secure a very narrow 3-1 victory, giving them a 1-0 lead in a best-of-three championship series.

A quick burst of offense allowed the Brew to tally two runs in the bottom of the first.

The Plowboys quickly composed themselves, shaking off the early lapse in defense by shifting the momentum into a lengthy pitching duel between Bethlehem starting pitcher Sam Iverson and Brass City starter Sean Keegan.

Brass City remained ahead with a 2-0 lead into the fourth, until Bethlehem finally generated enough offense to put up their first run. Brass City quickly responded by adding another run in the bottom of the fourth to regain a two-run lead over Bethlehem. The Brew managed to hold onto that lead to secure a 3-1 victory over the Plowboys and take the lead in the series.

Bethlehem’s Iverson tallied five strikeouts and, despite giving up 10 hits, kept Brass City from turning those hits into additional runs. The Brew’s Keegan allowed only five hits while striking out 10.

The Plowboys get their chance to tie the series and force game three on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Fuessenich Park at 1 p.m. If Bethlehem can manage a win and tie the series, game three will be held the following day, Sunday Aug. 23, also at 1 p.m. at Fuessenich Park.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
