Teen drowns in Housatonic near Bulls Bridge

BULLS BRIDGE — On Sunday, Aug. 16, 15-year-old Leonardy Adames of Roosevelt, N.Y., was pronounced dead at New Milford Hospital after drowning in the Housatonic River in the area of Bulls Bridge.

According to a press release written by New Milford Police Officer Brant Cadovius, the police department received a 911 call around noon on Sunday, from an unidentified individual reporting that someone had fallen into the river.

The New Milford Police Dive Team, Goshen Fire Water Rescue, Gaylordsville Fire Department and the New Milford Ambulance Association were called to the scene.

Almost an hour and a half after being reported to the police, the Goshen Fire Water rescue discovered Adames submerged in approximately 15 feet of water, approximately 20 feet from the shore.

Adames was transported to New Milford Hospital and pronounced dead.

Although water levels are not nearly as high now as they were in June, they remain at significantly elevated levels. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the Housatonic was moving at about 1,200 cubic feet per second, well above the historical average of  483 cfs. The rate in June was around 4,000 cfs.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
