Fun at Railroad Days carnival

NORTH CANAAN — It was like coming out of a long train tunnel into the light. Weeks of rain finally let up, just in time for Railroad Days.

The 11-day festival kicked off last Thursday, July 9, with a carnival and lots of locally sponsored events and contests, and some very fine weather.

Well, there was Saturday evening’s storm, but families had been flocking to the carnival since noon, and Sunday brought another afternoon of very fine weather for a bonus carnival day.

Railroad Days continues through this Sunday, July 19.

Upcoming events include the Ping Pong Ball Drop tonight (Thursday), beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Lawrence Field. The popular Teddy Bear Story Hour is Friday at the Douglas Library at 10:30 a.m. Saturday is a huge day with model railroading, the craft fair on the green, a last chance to bid at the library’s silent auction, Poetry is Music 14, firemen’s parade, the classic car cruise and lots of food, all leading up to a fireworks display that never fails to amaze.

But that’s not it. Save some energy for Sunday when the craft fair continues. Enjoy old-fashioned games — think frog jumping, bubble gum blowing and marshmallow golf  — during Family Fun Day, beginning at noon at Lawrence Field, or head to Laurelbrook Farm at noon, when hundreds of rubber ducks will race down the Blackberry River in a prize-filled contest.

For a complete schedule of events, check the July 9 issue of The Lakeville Journal or go to canaanchamber.com.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
