Weekend thrift shop celebrates grand opening

PINE PLAINS — The Church of the Regeneration, located on Pine Street, used the big holiday weekend to celebrate the grand opening of its Regenerated Thrift Shop, located behind the church.

Although the store has been open for a few weeks, volunteers from the church utilized the good weather to their benefit, setting up tables outside, selling space to vendors and offering free hot dogs and sodas to anyone wandering through. The event was a good mixture of church volunteers, thrifty shoppers and locals just looking for a nice diversion in the middle of a busy holiday weekend.

All proceeds will benefit the Episcopal Church, and with the thrift shop open year round on Fridays and Saturdays, the church is hoping it will become a permanent fixture in the community.

“We need to raise some money for the church, explained Marigo Brandt, who is spearheading the shop. Brandt said that so far, turnout has been good, and that’s a positive sign for the church, which is looking to stay afloat in tough economic times.

“We have a small congregation, so we need to be creative, added Helen Fuss. “And in this economy, I think thrift shops are important.

This year the Church of Regeneration will celebrate its 150th year in existence, explained Father Mike Shafer. The big anniversary date is Nov. 8, when Mark Sisk, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, will attend for services, followed by a brunch at Stissing House where all the churches in town will be invited.

The Regenerated Thrift Shop is located behind the church on Pine Street, and is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The shop carries everything from clothes and footwear for men, women and children to silver and dish ware, curtains and drapes. Anyone interested in donating to the shop may contact Brandt at 518-398-7325.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
