James J. Bakalar

FALLS VILLAGE—James J. Bakalar, 80, of 17 Meadow Lake Drive, Shelton, passed away at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford on June 15, 2009, after a brief illness.

Born in Bridgeport on May 13, 1929, he was the son of the late Anna (Chantlos) and John Bakalar. On April 24, 1954, he married Marian Beach of Trumbull, who predeceased him on Aug. 12, 2008.

Jim was a graduate of Central High School in Bridgeport. He was a carpenter for the Harry Maring Construction Company in Bridgeport for many years and later worked as a dispatcher for the Chapin and Bangs Steel Company. He was also employed as a security guard for Park City Hospital.

He was a Boy Scout throughout his youth and served as a Boy Scout leader. Jim was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church which later became the Golden Hill United Methodist Church in Bridgeport.

For more than 50 years he was involved in many activities in support of the church. He also worked as a volunteer at Griffin Hospital.

Jim is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and David Guffey of Towanda, Pa., Karen and Paul Bartomioli of Falls Village, Janice and Greg Caruso of Shelton and Jayne and Gary Laforge of North Kingstown, R.I.; 12 grandchildren, James and Meredith Guffey of Towanda, Amy Dietz and her husband, Eric, of Webster, N.Y., Leann Bartomioli of Rochester N.Y., Steven, Katie, Robyn and Erin Bartomioli of Falls Village, Michael and Kelly Caruso of Shelton and Benjamin and Tyler Laforge of North Kingstown; a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Elizabeth Bakalar, of Vista, Calif.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gus and Anne Pocevic, of Stratford; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
