DePretis property now in foreclosure; sale is June 20

SHARON — The Jackson Hill Road property of Robert and Margaret DePretis is the site of a foreclosure sale Saturday, June 20, and marks the end of a lengthy series of attempts by DePretis to develop the property.

In 2005, DePretis applied for permission to build a 26-unit condominium community for active adults 55 years and older at 40 Jackson Hill Road. The proposal sparked intense opposition in town and permission was ultimately denied.

DePretis then said he would create an 86-unit development, with 30 percent designated as affordable; but while that idea was under discussion he instead reached a tentative deal with Vista Corporation, headed by executives and board members of Mountainside in North Canaan.

Vista took two options to buy the property, planning to establish a for-profit, high-end substance abuse rehab for celebrity clients seeking privacy.

But Vista’s second option ran out in January 2008, and the company did not renew it.

Which left Depretis with a massive property for sale in a struggling economy.

“Nobody’s spending any money, certainly not for a place this size.

DePretis has several legal actions pending against the town and individuals on various boards and commissions.

He said he and his wife are moving to a rental cottage later this summer, and will continue the fight.

“I don’t run away from anything, said the 61-year-old DePretis, a former police officer and private investigator.

But the protracted fight has taken a toll.

“This has absolutely devastated my wife, he said. “This was her retirement. Margaret (Oskwarek) DePretis’ parents built the former retirement home and operated it from 1978 to 1994.

“Every day is a new experience, DePretis said with more than a tinge of sarcasm. “I got a call the other day. The bank appraised the place at $3.3 million in April, and did it again last week. It’s $3 million now; $300,000 gone in a matter of a couple of months.

“It’s so disheartening.

The property is being handled by Litchfield Bancorp.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
