Helen (White) Tennant

CORNWALL — Helen (White) Tennant, the widow of George G.Tennant Jr., died peacefully on June 3, 2009. She was 101 years old.

She was born Oct. 15, 1907, in Beverly, Mass., to Helen Torrey Andren and Samuel Peregrine White.  She graduated from Smith College in 1928.  

After their marriage in 1930, she and her husband lived first in Brooklyn, N.Y., then Tenafly, N.J., and Englewood, N.J.  They moved to Cornwall in 1969.

Helen was a voracious reader and student, with a lively mind and great interest in the world.   She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Cornwall, and sang in its choir for many years and served on its Adult Education Committee.  

She was also a member of the Sharon Hospital Auxiliary, the Woman’s Society of Cornwall, and the Society of Mayflower Descendants of the state of Connecticut.

After her husband died, she began traveling in Great Britain, going on five walking tours arranged by Smith College.  She took many courses given by the Taconic Learning Center here in Connecticut and from 1995 to 2001 she took the Smithsonian Institute’s summer courses at Oxford University.

She is survived by her daughter, Susanna Tennant Gretz, of London; and the children of her late brother, Peregrine White, and his widow, Junita White,  who are Katherine White of Raleigh, N.C., Helen White of Mouth-of-Wilson, Va., Emily White of Somerville, Mass., and  Peregrine White of Ipswich, Mass.

A memorial service will be heldTuesday, June 16, at 11:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ, Cornwall (Village Meeting House).  A reception will follow at the church.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Little Guild of St.Francis Animal Shelter, 285 Sharon  Goshen Turnpike, West Cornwall, CT, 06796.

Arrangements are under the care of Nutting Rowe Funeral Home.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
