PINE PLAINS — The Pine Plains FFA chapter held its annual banquet last Friday, June 5, in the Stissing Mountain High School cafeteria.

The banquet concludes a year of productivity for the FFA. Various reports were given by the members and outlined the different parades, fundraisers, community service projects, field trips and events held and attended by the chapter over the last school year.

About 160 friends and family attended the banquet, with food provided by Roger Lougheed of Peddlar’s Cafe. It was a bigger turnout than last year, FFA advisor Chris MacNeil said, and indicative of the positive year the group has had.

“Because of the [district’s] contingency budget we’ve had challenges, she acknowledged. “But the community has been really supportive because of that. We’ve really been able to do everything we had planned to do.

The evening consisted of dinner, a silent auction with items donated by many local businesses, two guest speakers, yearly reports by the members, an awards ceremony and the installation of new officers for the upcoming year.

The two guest speakers were Tom Colyer, a sheep farmer from Massachusetts, and state Sen. Vincent Leibell.

“I feel like I lost something by not being involved in agriculture at a young age, Leibell said in his speech. Leibell was chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs, and said that one of the committee’s main concerns was protecting agriculture.

There are two graduating seniors: Saja Lindsay Sudlow and Meagan Stephens. Sudlow has been a part of the FFA for two years, and said that coming from New York City has given her a unique perspective on the program.

“Being from Queens, I didn’t have any [agricultural] opportunity at all, she said. Sudlow also stressed that while she has learned many ag-specific things, like how to show a cow, the FFA is not just about agricultural but leadership as well.

“I like to lead and be that person someone can depend on, she said.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
