Student athletes of the week — Batter up!

PINE PLAINS — Athletic Director Mike Kohut picked two ballplayers for this week’s Athletes of the Week segment: Sarah Lima for softball and Sandro Frascati-Robinson for baseball. Here’s what makes them tick:

“Sarah’s dedication to softball has been outstanding. She has worked hard both on her defensive and offensive skills. This past week Sarah batted .571, going eight for 14 with six RBIs,� said coach Mike Kohut.

“After receiving a severe ankle sprain that sidelined Sandro for 3 weeks, he came back and pitched the last three innings to preserve a win versus Rhinebeck, striking out five batters on April 27. Two days later at Spackenkill, Sandro was three for four at the plate with two RBIs in the win,� said coach Mike Kohut.

Athletic achievement you are most proud of: Winning my first varsity baseball game, which was against Arlington B. We won 6-0. It was a two-hitter, shutout, complete game.

Favorite sport moment from the past year: Watching Steve Flinn pitch a no-hitter against Millbrook.

Measles Again! But Why?

The measles vaccine was licensed in 1963. It is a live attenuated virus vaccine that provides lifelong protection with few side effects. It does not cause autism. The virus is extraordinarily contagious. The measles vaccine is usually given with mumps and rubella vaccines, and often with the chicken pox vaccine. With earlier vaccines for whooping cough, tetanus, and diphtheria, and in the 1950’s, polio, life for children and parents became less fearful.

But let’s go back to 1963, when every child in the United States and across the world got measles. It caused them true misery. There were about 600,000 cases in children in 1963.

Applauding government responsiveness to citizen concernsThis is a shout-out to our local legislators, Representative Maria Horn and Stephen Harding. The Housatonic Herbicide Working Group has been expressing concerns about the use of certain herbicides that can reach nearby waterways, wetlands, and aquifers to control vegetation along the Housatonic Railroad’s right-of-way for several years now.
