Arnoff's shows off renovation at Chamber event

MILLERTON — It was a mild spring evening April 22 for the Tri-State Chamber Business After Hours event hosted by Arnoff Moving and Storage. Business people from Lakeville, Millerton and surrounding towns were greeted by an enthusiastic contingent of Arnoff employees, all willing to answer any questions and to show off the bright, modern renovated facility on North Elm Avenue.

President Mike Arnoff led a tour of the multiple-building plant, which has office space in the central brick building on the property, and plenty of well-organized storage space and truck space in the separate industrial buildings adjacent to it.

This year marks the 85th anniversary of the family business.

“We’re into the fifth generation of family involved with the business now, he said.

The business started out small and has continued to grow with every generation, Arnoff said, with facilities in seven different locations, including those in Lakeville (the original business site), Poughkeepsie, Lenox, Great Barrington and Albany in addition to the Millerton plant.

The Tri-State Chamber of Commerce’s 185 members come from northwest Litchfield County in Connecticut,  eastern Dutchess County in New York and southern Berkshire County in Massachusetts. The group arranges Business After Hours events at least monthly in order to showcase the area business and service community.

The next Business After Hours will be at Salisbury Garden Center in Salisbury, Conn., from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13. Then, on Thursday, May 28, from 5:30 to 7, there will be a Business After Hours at Sotheby’s Realty on Main Street in Lakeville. In June, TriArts Sharon Playhouse will host the Business After Hours on June 17.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
